Edwardian Fashion Show at the Prescott Public Library Dec 14

On Sunday, December 14 at 2 p.m., join the members of the Elks Opera House Guild as they show off their Edwardian fashions in the Founders Suite at the Prescott Public Library.

What, you may wonder, is the difference between Victorian and Edwardian fashion? Michelle Young, of the Elks Opera House Guild, gave a short explanation: Queen Victoria ruled from 1837 – 1901 (her death); that is officially the VICTORIAN era. Victoria was herself a great fashion icon of the time and the rest of Europe (and America) took their cues from her. Ladies dressed modestly, with high necklines, tiny waists and enormous bustles. Her son, King Edward, succeeded his mother and ruled from 1901 – 1910; that is officially the EDWARDIAN era. The bustle disappeared and women's clothing became much lighter and slimmer. As dresses became slimmer, hats grew wider and larger. This trend continued into the 1900's; it is usually pictured as what you see in 'Downton Abbey' or 'Titanic: the movie'.

The fashion show will last about 45 minutes with an associated PowerPoint presentation for the historically inclined, with time after for questions.
