Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission 25th Anniversary

The Prescott City Council recognized the Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission (PAWUIC) for its 25 years of service to the community this week at the September 1, 2015, City Council meeting.

City Councilwoman Jean Wilcox read a proclamation from Mayor Marlin Kuykendall to Commission Chairman Bob Betts at the meeting, commending the Commission for its work, as well as commending the Mayor and City Council back in 1990 for having the foresight to create the Commission.

The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors and other agencies joined with the City of Prescott in a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Commission on September 7, 1990.

“PAWUIC and the City of Prescott are close partners in our joint efforts to keep communities free from wildfires,” said Prescott Fire Chief Dennis Light. “The Prescott area has 28 subdivisions and neighborhoods that have earned the Firewise designation, more than any other region of the country. The defensible space created will afford firefighters, should a fire occur, a reasonable chance for successful response.”

Citizens of Prescott and surrounding communities are encouraged to participate in preparing private residences, public areas, and green belts for wildland fire season by visiting the Firewise website.
