Prescott Residents Celebrate MLK's Legacy

The MLK Day celebration in Prescott began with a Peace and Justice March beginnning at Prescott College at 9:30 a.m. The peaceful march went south on Grove, east on Gurley Street, around the courthouse plaza and then west on Gurley.

The 1.2-mile march concluded at Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W. Gurley St., where a breakfast celebration and volunteer fair took place. Designated as a day of service in all 50 states, Arizona Serve hosted the Breakfast Celebration and Volunteer Fair to connect potential volunteers with yearlong opportunities to help out.

Festivities included musical performances, a keynote speech by the Rev. Michael Cannon of St. Luke Ebony Christian Church, and an awards ceremony recognizing youths and adults who have shown dedication to serving Prescott.

More than 10 local nonprofits were on hand to educate the community on their volunteer needs, including Prescott Area Shelter Services, Highlands Center, Habitat for Humanity, People Who Care, Stepping Stones Agency, Boys to Men and Community Counts.

The fair also provided chances to complete smaller service projects on-site, including a table for people to write thank-you letters to veterans and a food drive benefiting the Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank.
